May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, which is celebrated by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and many other mental health awareness organizations in the US. During this month, NAMI encourages individuals with depression, anxiety disorders, and other mental health diagnoses to share their stories on social media using the hashtag, #NotAlone.
One of the primary goals of National Mental Health Awareness Month is eliminating the stigma associated with mental health conditions and let people experiencing depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues know that they’re #NotAlone.
According to NAMI, 1 in 5 adults in the United States – or 20% – experience some form of mental illness. That equals millions and millions of Americans experiencing depression, anxiety, or another form of mental illness every single year. Sadly, because of the stigma associated with mental health diagnoses, many of those who would benefit from counseling services don’t seek help.
We’re here to remind you that if you experience depression, anxiety, or another mental health issue, you’re not the only one and that our counseling services can be of great assistance to you.
It’s been known for generations that counseling is an effective treatment for mental health diagnoses including depression, anxiety disorders, and even more serious mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder. The most important step to developing a counseling relationship is making that first contact with a counseling service to schedule an initial appointment.
We know that it can be overwhelming or intimidating to pick up the phone and talk to a stranger about your mental health concerns. That’s why in addition to performing patient intake over the phone, we also have an online form where you can fill out your concerns, describe your symptoms, and share your goals for counseling from the comfort and privacy of your own home.
Once we’ve performed your patient intake, we’ll match you with a counselor. We’re able to match you to a counselor of your gender preference if desired. During your first visit with your counselor in our New Orleans area offices, you’ll discuss your symptoms, concerns, and goals for counseling. From there, you and your counselor will develop an individualized counseling treatment plan aimed at improving your mental health, teaching you coping skills, and lifting your overall mood and level of wellness.
Many of our New Orleans area patients have never experienced counseling before, and are understandably curious about what a counseling session will be like. The most important goal of our counselors is to create a space in which you feel safe and comfortable. We know that you can’t discuss your depression, anxiety, or other mental health concern if you don’t feel safe and secure.
